Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

• The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records.
• FERPA gives parents certain rights with respect to their children's education records. These rights transfer to the student when he or she reaches the age of 18 or attends a school beyond the high school level.

Student Accounts and FERPA

• Student financial records, including e-bills and 1098-T statements, are classified as education records covered under the provisions of FERPA. As a result, while we are happy to discuss general policies and practices relating to billing and collections with anyone, we cannot address questions relating to a specific student without the express authorization of the student. This restriction applies to everyone: including spouses/significant others and parents, even if the parent is the one who pays the bill.
• The student grants express authorization for another person to access the student’s financial records by setting that person up as an Authorized User by going to the Student Account section in myDrake and selecting Make a Payment. The Student Accounts office will be happy to assist any student needing help in setting up another person as an Authorized User.
• Please note that having the student’s personal login and password to myDrake does not make a person an Authorized User.
